Our main focus for next term is the children being able to complete a torture tables within 5 minutes. Many of the children know their times tables up to 12×12, however the challenge is being able to complete all facts up to 12×12 within 5 minutes!
Please encourage your child to practise their times tables daily using Hit the button or Tables master online.
Last Wednesday, our Palestinian learners were able to have a skype call to a school in Palestine. The children learnt how to say hello in Arabic and were able to ask lots of questions to the children in Palestine. It was very interesting finding out about the children’s lives and how they are different to ours. I was very proud of our Year 5’s as they represented Simon de Senlis sensibly and maturely and showed the children in Palestine what great learners we have at SdS!
Last week, our digitals leaders in Year 5 were awesome teachers. They were able to teach Year 6 how to code and download to the micro:bits, pictures, words and games. Year 6 now have the micro:bit bug, thanks to our amazing Year 5 digital leaders! We are hoping to have the same session in Year 5 soon from our digital leaders. Well done to the digital leaders!
In Science this week we have been learning about the forces in water. The children learnt that gravity is still present in water as some objects sink. However, other objects float and this is because the force of upthrust and gravity are balanced. During the lesson, the children created a boat using different materials. Most of the boats were successful which was fantastic! Above are some photos that were took during the lesson.
Last week was Anti-bullying Week. As a class, we discussed how you can make positive choices as a person and those which can make a person feel cared about. Many of the children have positive examples of when somebody had made them feel happy inside and ways they had made somebody else happy. We also discussed that we are a team as a class and that every one of us is special. Without somebody, we would not be Dyson class. Above is a photo of how we decided to show this idea.

This week in Dyson class we have been working really hard on reading poetry. We have been looking at the layout of different poems and the punctuation that a poet uses. The children have noticed that these aspects are different to non-fiction books and fiction books that they have read before. As a result, Dyson class have been practising reading poetry out loud and have created a performance in one of our literacy lessons. Here are some photos to show our learning taking place.
This week, Dyson class focused on developing their quick recall of calculations. We have been trying to ‘notice’ when we can work out a particular calculation or part of a calculation in our heads during mathematics lessons.

The children are getting used to noticing that 7 and 3 is a number bond to 10, therefore 70 + 30 = 100. We do not need to use column addition for this question as we ‘notice’ something about the numbers in this question.
One way the children have been developing their mental maths skills is by playing hit the button. We have created a competition board on our Maths Working Wall where the children have added the top score from the game. The children’s aim next week is to beat their own score in order to increase their efficiency in mathematics.
