How many triangles can you find?

Today in Maths Dyson class investigated how many triangles there were in the problem below. The problem caused a lot of discussion between the children as they were discovering more and more triangles that could be found. The children then looked deeper into the problem by sorting the found triangles into the different types of triangles. How many equilateral triangles are there in total? How many isosceles triangles are there in total? How many scalene triangles are there in total? Are there any right-angled isosceles triangles? Comment below your found solutions!

100 Books for Everyone!

Let’s win the SdS 100 Books for Everyone competition! Come on!!

Congratulations to those children who have completedĀ allĀ 15 books to read in Year 5.

However, as a year group we need a push! There is a prize for the year group who has most children who have completed the challenge. It’s a fantastic prize and Year 5 really want to win.

Please let me know if you have finished your 15 books and show me your sheet as soon as possible so I can add you to the list and give you your well deserved certificate. If you need a list of the Year 5 books they are in the yellow home time tray, so help yourself.

Each child is reading a lot in Dyson class at the moment which is fantastic. It would be great if we could challenge ourselves with the Year 5 Book List.

Let’s do a push on times tables!

This term the children have been very engaged in Times Table Rockstars, which they complete every Maths lesson for 3 minutes. We still need to push times table recall so please encourage your child to do Times Table Rockstars at home. All of the children have been given a login which is in their reading record. Let’s try and get Dyson children to the top of the leader board!

Non-chronological reports

In Literacy, Dyson class have been busy writing non-chronological reports about a famous river around the world. The children have researched the river, in pairs, on a device and then spent the next few lessons writing their reports. Here are some fantastic examples below:

Creating our own watershed!

In Geography we have been looking at how rivers are formed. We gathered resources from around the classroom to create a watershed. When precipitation falls on mountains the line that divides the mountains is called the watershed and this is where some of the precipitation is collected and then delivered to lakes, tributaries and rivers. By recreating this in the classroom, the children could see how the water (the rain) runs down the mountains and creates a river, lakes and tributaries.

Science Morning with Unilever

15 children from Dyson class had the exciting opportunity to go to Ecton Brook primary school on Friday morning to take part in a science morning hosted by Unilever. The children found out about DNA, germs and got to make their own ice cream! The children told us all about their morning when they got back to school. Here are some photos for you all to enjoy!


E-safety ‘Add me’ performance by Rushden Academy

This morning both Year 5 and 6 had the chance to watch a performance by Rushden Academy called ‘Add me’. The performance highlighted the importance of staying safe online.

The positive messages given to the children were:

  • Never accept a friend request if you do not know who the person is.
  • Never share your personal information with someone online.
  • Always tell an adult, that you trust, if you feel worried or are unsure when you are online.

It was a very powerful performance, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Torture Tables

Our main focus for next term is the children being able to complete a torture tables within 5 minutes. Many of the children know their times tables up to 12×12, however the challenge is being able to complete all facts up to 12×12 within 5 minutes!
