Distance between the planets.

This afternoon we made a model of the solar system, so that both the sizes of the planets and their distances from each other and the Sun were all to scale.

It wasn’t a straightforward problem, since although the planets are very big, their diameters are much, much smaller than the distances between them and the Sun.

We had to round then millions of miles to the nearest thousandth million and then work out a suitable scale.

The children loved the activity and realised that some planets were nearer than they had expected, whilst others were very, very far apart.

Earth and Space Projects

As part of our Culture Days, we have linked our Earth and Space topic and created a solar system. The children researched the size of their planet and as a class we made attempted to make an accurate scaled model – Mercury being the smallest planet and Jupiter being the largest. ercury being the smallest planet and Jupiter the biggest.
