Key Skills 09/05/14

Literacy/Creative Curriculum

Today we looked at different flags, and briefly discussed the origin of the Welsh flag. For key skills this weekend, you are to research any country’s flag, and find out how it originated. Try to avoid doing Brazil, as we all know about this! As well as Wales now.

In case you didn’t receive the maths sheet, it is pasted below!

As we have done before, each sequence follows a specific rule. All you need to do is fill in the two missing numbers from each sequence. On the right hand side there is also a box for you to write the rule in. One example has been completed for you.

Sequence Rule
Example: 4, 400, 40, 4000, 400, 40000, 4000, X 100, ÷ 10
14, 21, 24, 31, 34, ___, ___,
3, 9, 27, 81, ___, ___,
___, 18, 29, 40, ___, 62
6, 30, 150, ___, ___,
1000, 100, 10, ___, ___,
4, 8, 12, 20, 32, ___, ___,

Next, write your own sequence – we will share these next week in class, and try to work them out. Try to think hard on them, don’t just do 1, 2, 3, 4,  5, ___, ___,

Finally, something we haven’t talked about in ages!

Which of the following sets of three numbers is the odd one out, why? Remember, there is not just the one correct answer.

Example) 3, 6, 8 = 8 because the other two are multiples of 3. Or you could say… 3, because 3 is the only odd number.

1) 19, 29, 39 =

2) 38, 19, 48 =

3) 25, 65, 18 =

4) 64, 9, 144 =

5) 16, 19, 22 =

  1. The Italy Flag

There are three colours in the flag, and they are White,Red and Green. All of the colours have different meanings. Red means bravery, strength and valour. White means peace and honesty. Green means hope, joy and love. It was created by members of the French Republic in the Northern part of Italy. The design was created in 1848 and officially adopted in 1946.

  2. The United States Flag

The custom of folding the United States flag into the shape of a triangle bestows unique honor and respect upon the flag.Although the origins of this custom are unknown, it is believed that that the practice was developed during World War I when patriotism was high and the flag was universally embraced as a national symbol.

The colours of the flag is blue, white and red.

  3. In 1901,the commonwealth of Australia was formed.Until this time,Australia used britian’s flag, the Union Jack.A competition was held to find the design for Australia’s own flag.Five designers shared the prize because they came up with similar ideas for the Australian flag.
In the top left corner is the Union Jack! This shows that Australia is apart of the British commonwealth.Beneath the Union Jack is a large white star with seven points. The points represent the six states and territories.Originally this star had six points. The seventh point, for the territories was added in 1908.
On the right hand side are the stars of the southern cross. The southern cross was chosen because it can always be seen in the Australian sky at night.
